FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is Confirmation?

Very simply, Confirmation is the act by which a young person takes their next step in owning their faith. For many who were baptized as infants, Confirmation is the journey between “believing as my family does” and publicly stating “I choose to be a follower of Jesus!” Additionally, Confirmation is preparation for full membership in The United Methodist Church by profession of faith or by baptism (for those who were not baptized as infants).

  • Explain Cokesbury's Confirmation format...

Confirmation is an important season in our student’s journey of faith. Rather than teach Confirmation curriculum in a yearly short-term format, our curriculum is woven into our weekly programming. Each school year during the months of November and February, rather than teaching topical or seasonal messages, we will present our Confirmation curriculum.

Through the course of two years, students will have completed the Confirmation process and be offered an opportunity to take their Next Steps by means of public profession of faith, being baptized, and/or joining the church. We hope our format allows for students to explore and confirm their faith while being an active participant in the Cokesbury Church culture. Confirmation is more than a predefined amount of time, but rather an on-ramp to a lifelong pursuit of following Jesus.

  • Who is Confirmation for?

Confirmation at Cokesbury Church is geared toward Middle School students but all Students in 7th grade and older are welcome to attend. Any student looking to explore their beliefs, take a next step in owning their faith, or to pursue church membership are invited.

  • Is this EXCLUSIVE to Middle School Students?

Not at all! High School students are welcome to attend! This is a journey of one’s own faith – we only ask participants to be active in the material and open to the journey in front of them!

  • When does Confirmation happen?

Confirmation takes place during our regularly scheduled Wednesday programming during the months of November and February each year.

  • What does a typical Confirmation session look like?

Since Confirmation happens during our regularly scheduled programming, the format will be very similar: music, games, prizes, devotion, small group work. The main difference is the location of small groups. Instead of breakout rooms, all students will stay in Epworth as they respond to the message and work through Confirmation materials.

  • We missed a week. Now what?

All messages and materials are posted on this page (scroll up!). If you’re out, get caught up and then come back ASAP! This whole thing is way better when we’re together! When you complete a Confirmation class by watching online, be sure to complete the corresponding worksheets in your Confirmation Workbook so you can follow along. Reach out to the student team for a copy of the workbook to complete the lessons. Bring back the completed workbook so our Student Ministries staff can give you credit for completing the class!

  • What to expect at the end of the 2-year cycle...

As students advance in grade, so too will they complete the 10-topic, 16-session Confirmation journey. Since this is a brand-new program, we’re still exploring the best options to conclude the class. We want to celebrate the journey of these students, publicly proclaim their faith, because at the very least you can expect a better-educated student who has explored their faith, worked through questions and spent time with Jesus!

  • Is there a schedule?

Yes. Confirmation meets for selected Wednesdays at 6:30 PM. In 2020, we’ll meet February 5, 12, 19, & March 4.
